The EVCOM Industry Awards 2018 brand video winners revealed one production house as clear winner in the awards league table, but a close look at the results showed exceptionally strong performances from a clutch of producers.
We dug deep into the data to work out which are the hottest teams in UK brand video right now. We’ve included links to projects where available, just click on the film title. We include golds, silvers and bronzes for film projects in our figures.
It’s worth remembering that winning awards isn’t the only way of recognising a great brand film producer. Most projects are never going to be the eye-catching content that judges like, yet many deliver excellent business results consistently. This applies to in-house teams as well as agencies. So let’s hear it for the unsung heroes of brand video who don’t enter awards schemes.
EVCOM Industry Awards 2018 film winners
Before revealing the overall winner for film, let’s look at the producers who stood out for other reasons. Winning the most awards is a great achievement, but it can be influenced by other factors. For example, an entrant might have submitted more projects than anybody else, or they might have just one outstanding project.
Plastic Pictures hit the heights by being named Challenger Production Agency of the Year in the face of competition from six other agencies – more than ever before. Not content with that, they showed quality and breadth in their output by winning four awards for four different projects and three different clients – BP for ‘Agile’, Unilever for ‘Home Care Purpose’, and Amazon for ‘More Moments In-Store Retail Display’ and ‘Amazon Echo Show’.
The Edge and Radley Yeldar both walked away with two golds and a silver. The Edge triumphed in the prestigious Best Direction, Best Drama categories with ‘Meet Amy’ for HSBC and the latest instalment in the ‘Finding Patience’ series for Health Education England. RY took Best Production Agency, and a gold (External Communications) and a silver (Most Effective Use of Film) for Kaspersky Lab’s ‘The Data Dollar Store’.
Two agencies achieved a 100% strike rate by converting every one of their shortlisted entries into an award. Merchant Cantos bagged golds for ‘Jeremy’s Story’ for Standard Chartered and ‘Digital Town Hall Webcast’ for Suez, and two bronzes for ‘Talk About Suicide’ for the James Wentworth-Stanley Memorial Fund. Raw London’s #EscapeRobot for War Child UK hit the bullseye for consistency with gold in both the categories they were shortlisted in with.
BP-TV were named Best In-House Team and won a silver in the hard-fought Internal Communications category, showing that in-house teams can compete against production companies. Why don’t more enter awards?

And the overall film winner is…
Media Zoo maintained their recent leadership at the top of the table with 12 awards for five projects, including four golds. ‘Losing Mr Renton’, their extraordinary film for Santander, repeated its performance at this year’s Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards by winning five awards including two golds, more than any other project.
