The 2017 Televisual Corporate 50, published in the April edition, has produced its usual treasure trove of data about the corporate screen industry. So what are the highlights?
Congratulations to MerchantCantos, who keep no. 1 spot in the Corporate 50. It’s been an amazing journey for them as they successfully merged distinct businesses into an integrated agency.
Eight out of the top 10 change places and four agencies break into the top 20. The biggest riser in the league table is up 23 places while the biggest fall is down 22. Eight companies drop out of the 50 altogether, there are six brand new entrants and two return after a gap.
The top 10 are remarkably stable. Media Zoo are the biggest movers, up three to 7th, building on winning EVCOM’s Production Company of the Year award in 2016. Jack Morton and The Edge maintain their traditional top three spots. Despite market turbulence caused by Brexit, it looks like the past six months have been positive, helped by the devaluation of sterling. The market leaders have reinforced their positions.
Outside the top 10, Contra steal the headlines by storming into the Corporate 50 for the first time in 12th place, narrowly beating Wing who are straight in at 14th. Buddy Films head the list of fastest risers, up a whopping 23 places to 19th, a whisker ahead of A-Vision who rise 18 to 26th. The other new entrants are Headlines, Raw Productions, Gorilla Gorilla and Zut. Firehouse and Hub both return.
This year’s absentees are Belong, Blueprint, Centre Screen Productions, Myriad Global Media, New Moon, Proudfoot and Tailwind Productions. Remember this could be because they decided not to respond to the survey rather than any business issues.
Hats off to Casual Films, who claim top spot as their own for the first time. Last year they shared top spot with The Edge who are now 2nd. The Peer Poll is a tough test because it represents what rivals think of each other. Hitting the top is quite an achievement.
MerchantCantos rise two places to joint 4th while Buddy Films return to the top 10 in equal 7th. Contra, Giggle Group, Media Zoo, Quite Frankly and Wing all get their first rating in the Peer Poll in equal 9th.
It’s striking that EVCOM members feature heavily at the top table. Nine of the top 10 and 23 of the top 30 are in EVCOM, along with 10 of the 14 in the Peer Poll.
Next week I’ll blog about the industry as a whole, and what the past decade of data from the Corporate 50 can tell us about the direction the corporate screen industry is taking.
